A Debt to Delia

First published 2002 · 214 pages

A charming, banter-filled Regency romp where a guilt-ridden soldier's marriage of obligation blossoms into unexpected, joyous love.

What it feels like

This delightful Regency romance wraps the reader in a warm, cheerful embrace, balancing the initial solemnity of a soldier's debt with the sparkling wit of a classic marriage of convenience. The pacing is brisk and engaging, driven by sharp, humorous banter and a delightfully chaotic cast of dependents that bring life to the hero's stately home. While the emotional foundation rests on themes of duty, grief, and financial desperation, the atmosphere remains overwhelmingly cozy and lighthearted. The prose is accessible and effervescent, prioritizing character chemistry and gentle situational comedy over heavy angst. It is a perfect comfort read for those who adore traditional historical romances where practical arrangements inevitably surrender to genuine affection, healing laughter, and hard-won happily-ever-afters.

About the book

In the heat of a battle in the war against Napoleon, Major Lord Tyverne is wounded and trapped behind enemy lines. Then a redcoat comes to Ty's aid and insists the peer ride his horse to safety. Later, horrified to learn of his rescuer's death, Ty vows to live up to the brash young soldier's parting challenge to save someone else's life.

To repay the debt of honour, Ty offers his hand in marriage to the dead man's sister. And Delia Croft is certainly in need of help. For the retainer her cousin provides is barely enough to keep her and her dependents clothed and fed. But Delia longs for a union of love, not obligation - a union that the handsome officer may not even believe in...
