A War of Gifts

208 pages

A quiet, philosophical rebellion of childhood innocence against the sterile machinery of a military academy.

What it feels like

Reading this novella feels like finding a small, warm ember in a freezing, sterile room. It strips away the high-stakes tactical battles of its parent universe to focus on a quieter, more intimate conflict: the struggle to hold onto cultural identity and childhood innocence within a machine designed to erase both. The narrative moves at a steady, deliberate pace, driven by philosophical debates and the quiet defiance of highly intelligent children navigating an adult's war. The prose is clear and dialogue-heavy, emphasizing the moral weight of small actions. It is a tense but ultimately hopeful read, perfect for those who love character-driven science fiction that asks profound questions about what it means to remain human in an environment built for conformity.

About the book

At the Battle School, there is only one purpose, only one curriculum: the strategy and tactics of war. The children are drawn from all nations, all races, all religions. There is no room for cultural differences, no room for religious observances, and certainly no room for Santa Claus.

But the young warriors disagree. When one of them leaves a Sinterklaas Day gift in his best friend's shoe, that quiet act of rebellion becomes the first shot in a war of wills that the staff of the Battle School never bargained for.
