A Winter Haunting

First published 2002 · 398 pages

A claustrophobic, snow-muffled descent into a broken man's guilt-ridden psyche, where childhood ghosts refuse to stay buried.

What it feels like

Reading this novel feels like being trapped in a snowstorm as the temperature steadily drops and the shadows lengthen. It is a masterclass in slow-burn, atmospheric dread, wrapping the reader in the suffocating isolation of a Midwestern winter. The narrative is deeply anchored in the protagonist's fractured psyche, making it difficult to distinguish between the very real ghosts of his childhood and the hallucinations born of his profound midlife despair. The prose is deliberate and melancholic, taking its time to build a profound sense of unease before accelerating into visceral terror. It will thoroughly delight fans of psychological horror who appreciate deeply flawed, unraveling characters and the creeping, inescapable chill of a haunted house story where the most terrifying monsters are one's own regrets.

About the book

A once-respected college professor and novelist, Dale Stewart has sabotaged his career and his marriage -- and now darkness is closing in on him. In the last hours of Halloween he has returned to the dying town of Elm Haven, his boyhood home, where he hopes to find peace in isolation. But moving into a long-deserted farmhouse on the far outskirts of town -- the one-time residence of a strange and brilliant friend who lost his young life in a grisly "accident" back in the terrible summer of 1960 -- is only the latest in his long succession of recent mistakes. Because Dale is not alone here. He has been followed to this house of shadows by private demons who are now twisting his reality into horrifying new forms. And a thick, blanketing early snow is starting to fall...
