What it feels like

Reading this book feels like stepping into a classic, sunlit adventure where good and evil are clearly drawn, and loyalty is the greatest magic of all. The story opens with a sea-swept, harrowing intensity before settling into a steady, cozy rhythm in a pastoral nineteenth-century village. Brian Jacques brings his signature hearty prose, rich with sensory details, eccentric villagers, and mouth-watering descriptions, to a tale that is as much about solving dusty riddles as it is about eternal friendship. The atmosphere balances the melancholic weight of immortality with the warm, golden-hued comfort of finding a place to belong, even temporarily. It is a deeply earnest, comforting read that delights anyone who loves a clever mystery solved by a pure-hearted underdog and his faithful canine companion.

About the book

A boy and dog trapped aboard the legendary ship, the Flying Dutchman, are sent off on an eternal journey by an avenging angel, roaming the earth throughout the centuries in search of those in need. Their travels lead them to Chapelvale, a sleepy nineteenth century village whose very existence is at stake. Only by discovering the buried secrets and solving the dust-laden riddles of the ancient village can it be saved. This will take the will and wile of all the people-and a very special boy and dog!

Brian Jacques turns from Redwall to a very different sort of story, and succeeds admirably.
