Chain of Gold

The Last Hours Book One

624 pages

A glittering, demon-haunted romp through Edwardian London fueled by sharp banter and devastating romantic angst.

What it feels like

Stepping into this world feels like attending a lavish Edwardian ball where half the guests are armed with hidden blades. The atmosphere is a heady mix of glittering ballrooms, shadowy London streets, and the constant, thrumming tension of unseen threats. It reads at a brisk, engaging pace, driven just as much by the tangled, angsty romantic dynamics of its sprawling ensemble cast as by the supernatural mystery at its core. The prose is lush and dramatic, leaning heavily into witty banter and longing glances across crowded rooms. It is a deeply immersive experience that will delight readers who love their historical fantasy laced with found family tropes, fierce loyalties, and the delicious agony of unrequited love.

About the book

Cordelia Carstairs is a Shadowhunter, a warrior with the blood of the angel Raziel. When her father is accused of a crime, she, her mother, and her brother travel to London, where she hopes to prove his innocence. She soon encounters James and Lucie Herondale, her childhood friends, and is drawn into their exciting, glittering, world. All the while she must hide her love for James, who is sworn to marry someone else. All this is interrupted by a series of demon attacks unlike anything the Shadowhunters have ever seen. They poison whoever they touch, can walk in daylight, and are all but impossible to kill. When London is quarantined, Cordelia and her friends face a horrible choice that will reveal the price of being a hero.
