Coltrain's Proposal

First published 1998 · 384 pages

A classic, small-town battle of wills where professional rivalry masks a deep, simmering attraction.

What it feels like

Reading this classic 90s romance feels like stepping into a nostalgic, sun-baked Texas town where everyone knows your business and grudges run deep. The pacing is brisk, driven by the crackling, defensive banter of two people who are convinced they despise each other, even as the proximity of their shared medical practice pulls them inexorably closer. The mood balances the cozy familiarity of a tight-knit community with the sharp, angsty tension of a marriage of convenience built on ulterior motives. The prose is straightforward and emotionally direct, leaning into the melodrama of a gruff, stubborn alpha hero slowly being undone by a warm, resilient heroine. It is a deeply satisfying comfort read for anyone who loves watching a hardened heart finally surrender to love.

About the book

Dr. Louise Blakely didn't want to love Jeb Coltrain. They were supposed to be partners, running the Jacobsville medical clinic together, but instead, he treated her like the enemy. And yet when Lou tells Jeb that she's leaving, he shocks her by proposing!

It wouldn't be a real marriage, of course...at least, that was Jeb's intent. Then he started to get to know Lou, to let down his guard to her warmth and caring, and everything changed. After so many years of conflict, can he prove to Lou that his love is real?
