Dark River

A tense, secret-laden adventure where the weight of destiny threatens to fracture the bonds of family and clan.

What it feels like

Reading this installment feels like navigating a shadowy labyrinth where every turn reveals a new, dangerous secret. The atmosphere is thick with tension as the eager innocence of apprenticeship gives way to the heavy burdens of prophecy and hidden truths. The prose is brisk and sensory, grounding the reader entirely in the feral, instinct-driven world of the clans while exploring surprisingly complex moral gray areas. It is a deeply dramatic, emotionally urgent experience that thrives on clan politics, sibling friction, and the creeping dread of a fragile peace unraveling. Middle-grade fantasy fans who devour sprawling, animal-centric epics with high stakes and intense interpersonal drama will find themselves completely absorbed in this shadowy, propulsive chapter of the saga.

About the book

There will be three, kin of your kin... who hold the power of the stars in their paws.

The three children of Squirrelflight and Brambleclaw, grandchildren of the great leader Firestar, have thrived in their apprenticeships: Lionpaw's strength and energy serve him well as a warrior in training, Hollypaw's honesty and her understanding of The Warrior Code, and Jaypaw explores his mysterious powers and connection to StarClan as a medicine cat apprentice.

With more experience comes both power and danger: Lionpaw makes a friend – and a discovery – that must be kept hidden; Jaypaw learns a secret that could benefit ThunderClan by damaging others; and Hollypaw knows something that could avert a battle, if she could convince the rest of her Clan.

The three are torn apart as each discovers darkness: in themselves, in the Clans, and in the past. And, as conflict begins over what it means to be a warrior, rising tensions threaten to overflow, washing away the peace that has existed for many moons.
