A quiet, deeply empathetic journey across a desolate earth, where healing is both a profound gift and a heavy burden.

What it feels like

Reading this novel feels like walking across a vast, sun-scorched desert with a quiet but fiercely compassionate companion. It is a steady, atmospheric journey that prioritizes the emotional weight of healing over the adrenaline of survival. The prose is earthy and sensory, grounding the post-apocalyptic strangeness in the tactile realities of sand, scales, and human touch. There is a pervasive melancholy to the world, yet the narrative is anchored by an unwavering feminist empathy and a deep respect for bodily autonomy and the ethics of care. It is a story that lingers in the quiet moments between encounters, perfect for readers who gravitate toward contemplative, character-driven science fiction where the ultimate triumph is not conquering a broken world, but finding a way to mend it.

About the book

In a world devastated by nuclear holocaust, Snake is a healer. One of an elite band dedicated to caring for sick humanity, she goes wherever her skills are needed.

With her she takes the three deadly reptiles through which her cures are accomplished: a cobra, a rattlesnake, and the dreamsnake, a creature whose hallucinogenic venom brings not healing but an easeful death for the terminally ill.

Rare and valuable is this dreamsnake. When Grass is wantonly slain, Snake must journey across perilous landscapes to find another to take its place...
