Fables
The Deluxe Edition, Book One
261 pages
A gritty, hardboiled reimagining of childhood legends forced to navigate the shadows of modern-day New York.
What it feels like
Reading this feels like stepping into a smoky detective's office where the client just happens to be a fairy tale princess. It moves at a brisk, propulsive clip, blending the cynical, snappy dialogue of classic noir with the sprawling, magical lore of folklore. The mood is distinctly gritty and shadow-drenched, grounding fantastical beings in the mundane struggles of rent, politics, and past traumas. It is a story about exile and the heavy burden of survival, stripping away the glossy veneer of childhood fables to reveal the messy, flawed adults underneath. Fans of dark urban fantasy and clever, subversive retellings will devour this atmospheric blend of murder mystery, political thriller, and magical realism.

About the book
When a savage creature known only as the Adversary conquered the fabled lands of legends and fairy tales, all of the infamous inhabitants of folklore were forced into exile. Disguised among the normal citizens of modern-day New York, these magical characters have created their own peaceful and secret society within an exclusive luxury apartment building called Fabletown. When Snow White's party-girl sister, Rose Red, is apparently murdered, it's up to Fabletown's sheriff, the reformed and pardoned Big Bad Wolf, to find the killer. Meanwhile, trouble of a different sort brews at the Fables' upstate farm where non-human inhabitants are preaching revolution – and threatening Fabletown's carefully nurtured secrecy.
