Fire and Hemlock

432 pages

A brilliant, autumnal puzzle-box of a novel where forgotten memories hide a terrifying mythic reality.

What it feels like

Reading this book feels like waking from a dream you can only half-remember, where the edges of reality are blurred by something ancient and subtly menacing. It unfolds at a steady, deliberate pace, drawing you into a deeply psychological puzzle-box of fragmented memories and shifting truths. The prose is deceptively grounded, anchoring the eerie, autumnal mood in the mundane details of a British childhood, which only makes the creeping dread more effective. It is a story about the fierce, complicated transition from childhood to adulthood, and the ways stories can both trap and save us. Readers who delight in intelligent, layered narratives that respect their ability to piece together the unseen will find themselves completely absorbed by this haunting, myth-soaked experience.

About the book

Polly has two sets of memories...

One is normal: school, home, friends. The other, stranger memories begin nine years ago, when she was ten and gate-crashed an odd funeral in the mansion near her grandmother's house. Polly's just beginning to recall the sometimes marvelous, sometimes frightening adventures she embarked on with Tom Lynn after that. And then she did something terrible, and everything changed.

But what did she do? Why can't she remember? Polly must uncover the secret, or her true love — and perhaps Polly herself — will be lost.
