Fuzzy Mud

256 pages

A grounded middle-school drama that rapidly mutates into a tense, eerie environmental thriller.

What it feels like

Reading this book feels like stepping onto a familiar path only to realize the ground beneath your feet is slowly giving way. It begins with the deeply relatable, everyday anxieties of middle school—avoiding the local bully, navigating shifting friendships—before plunging the reader into a genuinely eerie, high-stakes environmental thriller. The narrative moves at a propulsive clip, aided by sparse, accessible prose and interspersed with ominous government transcripts that act like a ticking clock. There is a creeping, almost claustrophobic dread to the woods, contrasting sharply with the innocence of the young protagonists. It is a perfect fit for readers who want a fast, suspenseful read that balances ordinary kid-logic with massive, world-threatening consequences, leaving a lingering sense of wonder and caution.

About the book

Fifth grader Tamaya Dhilwaddi and seventh grader Marshall Walsh have been walking to and from Woodridge Academy together since elementary school. But their routine is disrupted when bully Chad Hilligas challenges Marshall to a fight. To avoid the conflict, Marshall takes a shortcut home through the off-limits woods. Tamaya, unaware of the reason for the detour, reluctantly follows. They soon get lost. And then they find trouble. Bigger trouble than anyone could ever have imagined.

In the days and weeks that follow, the authorities and the U.S. Senate become involved, and what they uncover might affect the future of the world.
