Humboldt's Gift

630 pages

A sprawling, comic, and deeply philosophical romp through the neuroses of midlife, the ghosts of literary genius, and the absurdities of modern America.

What it feels like

Reading this novel feels like being cornered by a brilliant, neurotic, and relentlessly articulate friend who is simultaneously having a midlife crisis and solving the mysteries of the universe. The narrative pace is decidedly meandering, driven not by plot but by the sheer, exuberant force of the narrator's tumbling thoughts, philosophical digressions, and comic despair. It is a deeply cerebral experience, yet grounded in the gritty, absurd realities of Chicago mobsters, messy divorces, and the relentless pursuit of money. The mood swings wildly between elegiac melancholy for lost genius and laugh-out-loud absurdity. It will thoroughly delight readers who crave dense, idea-driven prose, dark humor, and sprawling character studies about the beautiful, chaotic mess of the American intellectual life.

About the book

For many years, the great poet Von Humboldt Fleisher and Charlie Citrine, a young man inflamed with a love for literature, were the best of friends. At the time of his death, however, Humboldt is a failure, and Charlie's life has reached a low point: his career is at a standstill, and he's enmeshed in an acrimonious divorce, infatuated with a highly unsuitable young woman, and involved with a neurotic mafioso. And then Humboldt acts from beyond the grave, bestowing upon Charlie an unexpected legacy that may just help him turn his life around.
