I married you

176 pages

A frank, narrative-driven exploration of Christian marriage that reads more like a gripping cultural memoir than a pastoral textbook.

What it feels like

Reading this book feels like sitting in on a deeply intimate, cross-cultural counseling session where profound theological truths are hammered out on the anvil of real human struggle. Despite being rooted in a marriage seminar, the narrative moves at a surprisingly brisk pace, weaving the authors' teachings with the raw, often painful stories of the African men and women they counsel. The tone is remarkably frank for its era, tackling complex sexual and relational ethics with a compassionate, pastoral earnestness. It eschews dry didacticism in favor of a conversational, story-driven prose style that immerses the reader in the cultural tensions of its setting. It will deeply resonate with Christian readers and counselors looking for a grounded, grace-filled approach to marital intimacy.

About the book

Walter Trobisch and his wife Ingrid encompass three cultures, the USA, Walter's homeland, Austria, Ingrid's home, and francophone Africa where they served as missionaries for years. This book is the record of a four-day marriage seminar in an African city, and includes the basic content of the lectures delivered as well as the personal interactions with individuals during those days, ranging from a sex slave to a pastor with marriage tensions to a 34 year old man who wants to marry a 13 year old to insure he marries a virgin. It is fast moving (it reads like an action novel), thoroughly Biblical, and has proven life-changing for many readers. It is the most usable book from a pastoral standpoint that I have every opened. - J Garrington
