In the Lake of the Woods

First published 2007 · 351 pages

A chilling, labyrinthine descent into the fog of memory, trauma, and the terrifying unknowability of the people we love most.

What it feels like

Reading this novel feels like navigating a dense, freezing fog where every shadow hides a terrifying truth. It is a masterclass in creeping dread, anchoring you in the claustrophobic isolation of a remote lakeside cabin while simultaneously pulling you into the fragmented, traumatic memories of a fractured mind. The narrative circles its central mystery with a steady, hypnotic rhythm, using documentary-style evidence and shifting hypotheses to build a profound sense of unease. Instead of racing toward a neat conclusion, the story forces you to sit with ambiguity, exploring the terrifying realization that we can never truly know another person, or ourselves. It will deeply satisfy readers who love atmospheric, psychologically complex literary fiction that lingers long after the final page.

About the book

On a lake deep in Minnesota's north woods, John and Kathy Wade are trying to reassemble their lives. John, a rising political star, has just suffered a devastating electoral defeat. Kathy attempts to comfort her husband, but soon it becomes apparent that something is horribly wrong between them, that they have hidden too much from each other.

Then one day Kathy vanishes. Their boat is gone - did she drown or is she lost? Or did she flee, disappearing into a new life? As a massive search gets under way, the possibilities multiply in terrifying directions. Uncovering the truth requires an investigation of Wade's life, and gradually we come to see that he is a sorcerer lost inside his own magic, a Houdini capable of escaping everything but the chains of his darkest secret.
