Lord Of Hawkfell Island

First published 1993 · 403 pages

A boisterous, old-school Viking romance where a fierce captive turns her captor's household—and heart—completely upside down.

What it feels like

Reading this book feels like stepping into a delightfully chaotic, old-school romance where the clash of swords is matched only by the clash of stubborn wills. The pace is brisk and energetic, driven by snappy banter, domestic squabbles, and a surprisingly humorous battle of the sexes. Rather than a dark, brooding captivity tale, the atmosphere is boisterous and spirited, filled with unruly hounds, terrible cooking, and a heroine who refuses to be a victim. The prose is straightforward and earthy, focusing on the fiery chemistry and escalating tension between the leads. It is a perfect escape for readers who love vintage historical romance, where a fiercely competent woman gleefully dismantles a grumpy warrior's defenses and builds a home in the wreckage.

About the book

Rorik is a Viking warrior, as fierce and savage as the North Sea during the winter solstice. Mirana is a Viking woman who loves birds, is more ingenious than most men, and loyal down to her toes. Her life changes utterly one fateful day when Rorik and his men come to Clontarf, a Viking fortress on the eastern coast of Ireland, to kill her half-brother. But she is the one taken as a hostage to use as a pawn against him.

Rorik is the Lord of Hawkfell, an island off the east coast of Britain. The moment he brings his captive home, it seems that everything begins to fly out of his control. The women are out to teach the men a lesson with the result that the food is rank, Rorik's family is out for Mirana's blood, a murderer is on the loose, and a huge mongrel, Kerzog, dotes not only on his master but also on his master's captive.
