A sweltering, claustrophobic descent into a decaying metropolis where humanity is suffocating under its own weight.

What it feels like

Reading this novel feels like being trapped in a sweltering, inescapable crowd. The atmosphere is intensely claustrophobic and grimy, dripping with the sweat of a desperate, overpopulated metropolis on the brink of total collapse. It blends the weary, cynical edge of a hardboiled police procedural with the bleak world-building of classic dystopian science fiction. The prose is utilitarian but highly evocative, bombarding the reader with the sensory overload of a city where privacy, food, and space are unimaginable luxuries. As the narrative pushes forward at a brisk, urgent pace, the emotional weight grows increasingly oppressive, offering fleeting glimpses of connection before crushing them under the sheer, unyielding mass of humanity. It is a perfect read for fans of gritty, socially conscious sci-fi who appreciate a dark, atmospheric warning of the future.

About the book

A gangster is murdered during a blistering Manhattan heat wave. City cop Andy Rusch is under pressure to solve the crime and captivated by the victim's beautiful girlfriend. But it is difficult to catch a killer, let alone get the girl, in crazy streets crammed full of people. The planet's population has exploded. The 35 million inhabitants of New York City run their TVs off pedal power, riot for water, loot and trample for lentil 'steaks' and are controlled by sinister barbed wire dropped from the sky.
