What it feels like
Reading this memoir feels like sitting at the kitchen table with a wise elder as she unravels the most complicated love story of her life. The pace is steady and reflective, carried by prose that is characteristically lyrical, rhythmic, and steeped in the warmth of oral storytelling. It immerses you in a bittersweet, intimate atmosphere where the deep ache of childhood abandonment slowly gives way to a fierce, hard-won reconciliation. The tone is remarkably forgiving and candid, never shying away from the pain of fractured family dynamics but always tilting toward grace. It will deeply resonate with readers who are drawn to memoirs about the messy, beautiful realities of mother-daughter relationships, the resilience of Black women, and the transformative power of choosing to forgive.

About the book
In this book, Angelou details what brought her mother to send her away, and unearths the well of emotions she experienced long afterward as a result. For the first time, she reveals the triumphs and struggles of being the daughter of Vivian Baxter, an indomitable spirit whose petite size belied her larger-than-life presence, a presence absent during much of the author's early life. When her marriage began to crumble, Vivian famously sent three-year-old Maya and her older brother away from their California home to live with their grandmother in Stamps, Arkansas. Their reunion a decade later began a story that has never before been told.
