Night of the Living Dummy II

First published 1996 · 144 pages

A fast-paced, uncanny descent into childhood paranoia where the scariest part isn't the monster, but the fact that no adults believe you.

What it feels like

Reading this book feels like a sleepover dare gone wrong, wrapped in the comforting nostalgia of 90s middle-grade horror. The pace is relentlessly brisk, engineered with punchy sentences and signature cliffhanger chapter endings that make it impossible not to turn the page. It perfectly captures the uncanny valley dread of inanimate objects watching you in the dark, layered over the very real childhood frustration of sibling rivalry and adults who simply refuse to listen. The mood balances campy melodrama with genuine, creeping paranoia, creating a safe but effective thrill ride. It delights readers who love a classic, spooky campfire tale where the mundane safety of a suburban bedroom is slowly, delightfully corrupted by something sinister.

About the book

Amy's ventriloquist dummy, Dennis, keeps losing his head. So Amy begs her family for a new dummy. That's when her dad finds Slappy in a local pawnshop. Slappy's kind of ugly, but Amy's having fun practicing her new routine. Then horrible things start happening. Horrible, nasty things. Just like what happened the first time. Because there's something odd about Slappy. Something not quite right. Something evil.
