Nightflyers

First published 1985 · 384 pages

A claustrophobic, dread-soaked haunted house story locked inside a metal tin hurtling through the cold void of deep space.

What it feels like

Reading this novella feels like being trapped in a shrinking room where the lights are slowly flickering out. It masterfully merges the cold, vast emptiness of deep space with the intimate, suffocating terror of a classic haunted house. The narrative begins with a steady hum of scientific curiosity, but that intellectual detachment quickly rots into a visceral, dread-soaked paranoia. The prose is sharp and atmospheric, rendering the sterile corridors just as terrifying as the unseen malevolence lurking within the ship's very circuitry. It is a propulsive, bloody descent into madness and survival that will delight readers who love their science fiction laced with heavy doses of gothic horror, inescapable isolation, and relentless, creeping tension.
