Queenie
422 pages
A tender, historical slice-of-life that celebrates the quiet resilience of childhood and the comforting magic of a good story.
What it feels like
Reading this book feels like sitting by a hospital bed as a dreary, frightening room is slowly transformed by the sheer force of a child's imagination. The narrative unfolds at a steady, comforting pace, wrapping the reader in a bittersweet but ultimately hopeful atmosphere. It perfectly captures the sensory details of a 1950s children's ward—the strict matrons, the clinical smells, and the profound loneliness of being away from home—while countering that bleakness with the warmth of a purring cat and the magic of storytelling. The prose is accessible and earnest, channeling a spirited young voice that refuses to be broken by illness or unkindness. It is a deeply empathetic read that will delight anyone who loves historical fiction where quiet resilience, animal companionship, and a vivid inner life save the day.

A heartfelt book about a girl called Elsie who recovers from an illness. She is fond of cats and is a wonderful story teller. Even though she got teased Elsie stayed strong and managed to pull through. Definitely recommended.
