Rosie's walk
First published 1967 · 32 pages
A masterclass in visual irony where the serene text tells one story and the slapstick illustrations tell another.
What it feels like
Reading this classic picture book is an exercise in pure, joyful dramatic irony. The experience hinges entirely on the brilliant disconnect between the text and the art. As you read the incredibly sparse, deadpan prose, which consists of just a single, leisurely sentence tracking a simple farmyard stroll, the illustrations deliver a riotous, slapstick comedy of errors right behind the protagonist's back. It creates a wonderfully playful atmosphere where young readers get to feel smart, thrilling at the safe peril and giggling at the predator's escalating misfortunes. The mood is sunny and oblivious, perfectly capturing the feeling of a lazy afternoon walk, while the visual pacing keeps the audience eagerly turning the page to see what hilarious disaster strikes next.

About the book
Rosie the hen leaves the chicken coop and sets out for a little walk. Right behind her is the fox, slyly trying to catch up with her. Rosie's walk is quiet, uneventful and eventually leads her back to the coop, blissfully unaware of the fox's travails as he tries -- unsuccessfully -- to navigate the obstacle course that Rosie has led him through.
