Scavenger Hunt

215 pages

A nocturnal descent into the desert where teenage thrills dissolve into a surreal, grief-fueled nightmare.

What it feels like

Reading this book feels like driving too fast down a dark desert highway with the headlights off. It captures that specific, intoxicating blend of 90s teen angst and surreal horror, pulling you from the familiar excitement of a high school game into a disorienting, dread-soaked nightmare. The narrative moves with a propulsive, fever-dream logic, where grief and obsession warp the boundaries between the living and the dead. The prose is direct but heavily atmospheric, leaning into the melodrama of youth while delivering genuine, creeping chills. It is perfect for readers who crave vintage YA thrillers, where the real monster is often a haunted past and the desert landscape feels as isolating and dangerous as the protagonist's own mind.

About the book

School was almost over. A secretive club on campus had organized a scavenger hunt for the entire senior class. In small groups, and with the help of cleverly planted clues, the kids are led throughout the city, and then deep into the nighttime desert. The sponsoring club has promised a wonderful prize for the first group to reach the goal of the hunt.

But for Carl Timmons, a troubled young man who has recently lost his best friend, the hunt will become a nightmare. Led astray by his love for a strangely beautiful girl, he will wander far from the others, and back into a haunted past, where the line between the living and the dead is blurred and broken.
