Sharpe's Rifles
Richard Sharpe and the French invasion of Galicia, January 1809
First published 1988 · 479 pages
A gritty, mud-splattered plunge into the brutal mechanics of 19th-century warfare, anchored by a fiercely pragmatic underdog.
What it feels like
Reading this book feels like marching through the freezing mud of a Spanish winter, the smell of black powder and blood thick in the air. It is a fiercely propulsive, unsentimental experience that strips away the romanticism of war to reveal the brutal, chaotic reality beneath. The narrative thrives on tension, not just from the constant threat of enemy cavalry, but from the simmering class resentment between a working-class officer and his mutinous, aristocratic-led army. The prose is sharp and tactile, immersing you in the deafening roar of musket fire and the desperate scramble for survival. It will deeply satisfy readers who crave historically rigorous, action-heavy military fiction where loyalty is earned in blood and victory is always a messy, hard-fought compromise.

About the book
As if being cut off from the army and surrounded by enemy cavalry is not bad enough, this officer who in the eyes of his society does not belong to his rank, Richard Sharpe has to deal with mutinous soldiers as well! It is only when he meets with a band of partisans that things become tolerable at best. Bolstered by his new allies and with his country having no faith in eventually winning against Napoleon in the peninsular war, 1807-1814, Sharpe and his elite riflemen with the partisans help plan an ambitious mission to give Spain hope and snatch victory from disaster, which is borderline crazy but could work.. If you believe in superstition.
