Siege and Storm
First published 2001 · 497 pages
A sweeping, high-stakes magical adventure where the burden of power threatens to eclipse the light of first love.
What it feels like
Stepping into this sequel feels like being swept up in a sudden, dangerous squall. The narrative moves at a brisk, cinematic clip, trading the isolated training grounds of the first installment for a sprawling, perilous journey across oceans and frozen tundras. The mood is shadowed and tense, laced with the thrilling, sharp-witted banter of new allies and the suffocating dread of an ever-present, charismatic villain. Bardugo's prose is accessible but deeply atmospheric, anchoring the reader in a world of opulent palaces and terrifying monsters. It is a story fundamentally about the heavy, isolating burden of power and the agonizing choice between a simple life and a world-saving destiny. This will devour readers who crave sweeping romantic fantasy, morally gray antagonists, and high-stakes magical politics.
