The Afterglow

Alpine Doctor

190 pages

A crisp, alpine romantic drama full of unrequited sighs, sophisticated rivals, and frustratingly dictatorial doctors.

What it feels like

Set against the crisp backdrop of a Swiss finishing school, this vintage romantic drama offers a steady, cozy immersion into the world of workplace crushes and romantic rivalry. The mood is distinctly alpine and insular, wrapping the reader in the day-to-day emotional turbulence of a protagonist trying—and failing—to keep her heart out of trouble. The narrative tone balances lighthearted school-day observations with the earnest, yearning angst of unrequited love and frustrating encounters with dictatorial colleagues. The prose is straightforward, focusing heavily on the internal sighs and shifting affections of its cast. It is a perfect, comforting read for anyone who delights in old-fashioned romantic entanglements, sophisticated rivals, and the classic tension of trying to ignore a grumpy doctor.

About the book

Lacey Cavendish enjoyed her job as English teacher at an exclusive girls' finishing school in Switzerland - but she certainly had no intention of following the example of her young charges and falling in love with the school doctor, Roger Soames. She didn't even like Doctor Soames very much - he was rude and dictatorial, and the pupils were welcome to him - so Lacey turned her feelings in another direction, that of Doctor Ludwig Heist. But this was equally hopeless, she soon realised. Doctor Heist may or may not have been interested either in a charming pupil, or in the more sophisticated Gerda Reisenfeld, but he certainly wasn't going to notice Lacey!
