A brisk, woodsy adventure about stepping out of a legendary mentor's shadow and proving your own worth.

What it feels like

This brisk, woodsy adventure feels like a crisp autumn hike that suddenly turns into a thrilling hunt. It captures the specific, satisfying tension of an apprentice finally left to their own devices, forced to rely on their wits and training without a safety net. The narrative moves with the swift, purposeful energy of a loosed arrow, balancing cozy moments of cabin life with the suspense of tracking an unknown threat through the dark. The prose is clear and practical, lingering on the satisfying details of archery, tracking, and clever problem-solving rather than heavy magic. It is a perfect, bite-sized delight for readers who crave earnest coming-of-age stories, witty banter, and the triumphant feeling of a young hero proving their doubters wrong.

About the book

Princess-turned-apprentice Maddie is fast learning all the skills she'll need to become a Ranger, under the guidance of her mentor, the legendary Will Treaty.

When Will has to leave the cabin in the woods for a few weeks, he leaves the fief in Maddie's hands, confident that she can keep an eye on things in Redmont.

Then a farming husband and wife come knocking for help, complaining about a mysterious beast that is stealing their farm animals. They don't think Maddie is up to the task, but she's determined to prove them wrong.

Maddie starts to investigate - and comes up with a plan that involves putting her own life on the line.
