The Burning Room

388 pages

A methodical, slow-burn procedural where the ghosts of a decade-old crime haunt the gritty, sun-bleached streets of Los Angeles.

What it feels like

Reading this procedural feels like riding shotgun with a seasoned detective through the sprawling, sun-bleached streets of Los Angeles. The narrative unfolds with a steady, methodical rhythm, drawing you into the meticulous, often frustrating reality of cold-case police work. There is a world-weary melancholy to the atmosphere, balanced by the sharp, unadorned prose that cuts straight to the bone of institutional corruption and buried secrets. As the veteran investigator mentors his rookie partner, the emotional texture shifts from a quiet, analytical puzzle to a tense, high-stakes pursuit of justice. It is a deeply satisfying experience for readers who crave gritty realism, moral complexity, and the quiet thrill of watching a master investigator slowly untangle a decade-old web of lies.

About the book

In the LAPD's Open-Unsolved Unit, not many murder victims die almost a decade after the crime. So when a man succumbs to complications from being shot by a stray bullet nine years earlier, Bosch catches a case in which the body is still fresh, but all other evidence is virtually nonexistent. Now Bosch and his new partner, rookie Detective Lucia Soto, are tasked with solving what turns out to be a highly charged, politically sensitive case. Starting with the bullet that's been lodged for years in the victim's spine, they must pull new leads from years-old information, which soon reveals that this shooting may have been anything but random.
