The Mediator

Shadowland

272 pages

A sun-drenched, snark-filled romp through the afterlife where the biggest annoyance isn't the ghosts, but the feelings they bring with them.

What it feels like

Reading this feels like stepping straight into the golden era of early-2000s paranormal romance, complete with leather jackets, mall trips, and a delightfully sarcastic narrator who would rather throw a punch than shed a tear. The contrast between the sun-drenched, breezy California setting and the spooky, lingering presence of the undead gives the atmosphere a uniquely energetic tension. It moves at a brisk, conversational clip, pulling you in with a voice that is irreverent, funny, and fiercely independent. Beneath the snark and the supernatural brawls, there is a surprisingly tender exploration of grief, blended families, and the heavy burden of a destiny you never asked for. It is perfect for anyone who loves a tough-as-nails heroine and a slow-burn, impossible romance.

About the book

Suze is a mediator -- a liaison between the living and the dead. In other words, she sees dead people. And they won't leave her alone until she helps them resolve their unfinished business with the living. But Jesse, the hot ghost haunting her bedroom, doesn't seem to need her help. Which is a relief, because Suze has just moved to sunny California and plans to start fresh, with trips to the mall instead of the cemetery, and surfing instead of spectral visitations.

But the very first day at her new school, Suze realizes it's not that easy. There's a ghost with revenge on her mind... and Suze happens to be in the way.
