The Nightingale Legacy

First published 1994 · 554 pages

A sweeping, gothic-tinged historical romance where a spirited runaway collides with a brooding lord on the windswept Cornish moors.

What it feels like

Reading this classic historical romance feels like stepping onto the windswept, dramatic moors of Cornwall, wrapped in a cloak of gothic mystery and crackling romantic tension. The pace is brisk and melodramatic, pulling you through a whirlwind of daring escapes, dark family secrets, and sharp-tongued banter. The atmosphere is distinctly brooding, anchored by a crumbling estate filled with gruff men and a hero who insists he prefers the company of his hounds. Yet, beneath the suspense and the shadows of obsessive villains, the emotional core is surprisingly tender, tracing the collision of a fiercely independent heroine and a lonely, reluctant protector. It will thoroughly delight fans of old-school, sweeping romances who crave high stakes, witty sparring, and unapologetic passion.

About the book

Caroline Derwent-Jones is at the eve of her nineteenth birthday. She's chomping at the bit to get out from under the control of her smarmy guardian, the frighteningly obsessive Roland Ffalkes. But Ffalkes has other plans for Caroline. She manages to escape him only to find herself in the fascinating company of Frederick North Nightingale, Lord Chilton.

As tragedy and mystery thicken the air, Caroline finds herself more and more drawn to Lord Chilton, a man who claims he's a lonely beggar, his soul suited for solitude and for walking his hounds on the moors.

Mysteries old and mysteries new abound. Misogyny is rampant in Lord Chilton's house, Mount Hawke, filled only with men. But to his surprise, Lord Chilton finds he wants nothing more than to have Caroline Derwent-Jones in his life....
