The One and Only Ivan

352 pages

A quiet, deeply moving exploration of captivity and friendship told through the spare, poetic voice of a gentle giant.

What it feels like

Reading this book feels like sitting quietly with a wise, gentle soul who has seen too much but still believes in the possibility of change. The narrative unfolds at a steady, deliberate pace, built from spare, poetic vignettes that perfectly capture the profound simplicity of an animal's perspective. There is a lingering melancholy to the atmosphere, rooted in the harsh realities of captivity, yet it is continually pierced by moments of quiet humor, deep tenderness, and the transformative power of art. The prose is minimalist but emotionally devastating, leaving plenty of white space for the reader to absorb the weight of the story. It is a deeply empathetic experience that will resonate with anyone who cherishes stories about chosen family, quiet courage, and the moral imperative to protect the vulnerable.

About the book

Having spent 27 years behind the glass walls of his enclosure in a shopping mall, Ivan has grown accustomed to humans watching him. He hardly ever thinks about his life in the jungle. Instead, Ivan occupies himself with television, his friends Stella and Bob, and painting. But when he meets Ruby, a baby elephant taken from the wild, he is forced to see their home, and his art, through new eyes.
