The People of Sparks (Book of Ember #2)

356 pages

A sun-baked, thoughtful continuation of a survival story that asks what happens after the escape, when the real work of living together begins.

What it feels like

Trading the claustrophobic mystery of its predecessor for the blinding, sun-baked reality of the surface world, this story settles into a steady, simmering exploration of survival. The initial awe of discovering green earth and open sky quickly gives way to a tense, apprehensive mood as two vastly different cultures collide over limited resources. It feels less like a frantic escape and more like a thoughtful, slow-burn ethical dilemma, capturing the gritty friction of prejudice and the terrifying ease with which communities slide toward conflict. The clear, grounded prose makes complex themes of xenophobia and peacebuilding deeply accessible. It is a deeply satisfying read for those who love post-apocalyptic worlds focused not on destruction, but on the messy, hopeful work of rebuilding.

About the book

The People of Sparks picks up where The City of Ember leaves off. Lina and Doon have emerged from the underground city to the exciting new world above, and it isn't long before they are followed by the other inhabitants of Ember. The Emberites soon come across a town where they are welcomed, fed, and given places to sleep. But the town's resources are limited and it isn't long before resentment begins to grow between the two groups. When anonymous acts of vandalism push them toward violence, it's up to Lina and Doon to discover who's behind the vandalism and why, before it's too late. --From the Hardcover edition.
