A tender medieval romance about two deeply scarred people finding solace and healing in one another.

What it feels like

Reading this medieval romance feels like stepping out of a harsh, unforgiving storm into a quiet, slowly warming room. The narrative unfolds at a steady, deliberate pace, honoring the heavy weight of physical and psychological trauma carried by its protagonists. It is a deeply earnest and empathetic reading experience, steeped in a somber but ultimately hopeful atmosphere. Rather than rushing into passionate romance, the story lingers on the delicate, hesitant steps required to build trust between two people who have only known cruelty or isolation. The prose stays close to their emotional scars, making every small moment of vulnerability feel monumental. It will deeply satisfy readers who love historical fiction focused on mutual healing, gentle patience, and the hard-won triumph of tenderness over fear.

About the book

Gillian of Warewick knows no other treatment than the terrible physical and mental abuse issued by her father. When he arranges a match for Gillian with Christopher of Blackmour, she is fearful: Blackmour is rumored to be an evil sorcerer. When Gillian meets him, he proves to be far more of a man than her father is, yet he is unwilling to be a lover to Gillian. She finds that Blackmour has as many psychological scars to heal as she has physical scars.
