Those shoes
40 pages
A tender, grounded exploration of childhood longing, financial hardship, and the quiet power of giving.
What it feels like
Reading this book feels like a gentle, honest conversation about the hard realities of growing up. It moves at a steady, reflective pace, immersing the reader in the very real, very sharp ache of childhood longing and that desperate need to fit in. The mood is grounded and slightly bittersweet, never shying away from the sting of poverty or the weight of peer pressure, yet it remains deeply wrapped in the warmth of a loving family. The prose is direct and emotionally resonant, perfectly capturing a child's internal tug-of-war between desire and empathy. It is an incredibly moving experience that will delight parents and educators looking for a compassionate, unsentimental story that ultimately celebrates quiet generosity and the true meaning of having enough.

About the book
All Jeremy wants is a pair of those shoes, the ones everyone at school seems to be wearing. Though Jeremy's grandma says they don't have room for "want," just "need," when his old shoes fall apart at school, he is more determined than ever to have those shoes, even a thrift-shop pair that are much too small. But sore feet aren't much fun, and Jeremy soon sees that the things he has warm boots, a loving grandma, and the chance to help a friend are worth more than the things he wants.
