White nights

A Thriller (Shetland Island Quartet)

First published 2008 · 416 pages

A disorienting, atmospheric mystery where endless daylight unravels small-town secrets and clouds a detective's judgment.

What it feels like

Reading this thriller feels like stepping into a landscape where the sun never truly sets, creating a disorienting and claustrophobic atmosphere that slowly unravels the mind. The steady, suspenseful pacing mirrors the methodical work of a police procedural, yet the mood is deeply psychological, steeped in the unsettling tension of a tight-knit community hiding dark secrets. As the endless daylight blurs the boundaries between reality and illusion, the narrative explores the emotional weight of clouded judgment and personal entanglements interfering with professional duty. The prose is atmospheric and tense, perfectly capturing the eerie, sleepless environment of the Scottish islands. It is an ideal read for fans of isolated mysteries who love a detective struggling to see clearly through the glare of a midnight sun.

About the book

Bella Sinclair throws a party to launch an exhibition of her work and to introduce the paintings of Fran Hunter. When a mysterious Englishman bursts into tears and claims not to know who he is or where hes come from, then is found hanging from a rafter in a boathouse the next day, Detective Jimmy Perez is convinced that this is a local murder. He is reinforced in this belief when Roddy, Bellas musician nephew is murdered too. But the detectives relationship with Fran Hunter clouds his judgement. And this is a crazy time of the year when night blurs into day and nothing is quite as it seems.
