Who Is Vera Kelly?

329 pages

A cool, atmospheric slow-burn of a spy novel that trades explosive action for sharp psychological insight and mid-century queer longing.

What it feels like

Reading this book feels like stepping into a smoky, dimly lit mid-century bar where everyone is hiding a secret. It is a steady, atmospheric slow-burn that completely subverts the traditional espionage thriller, trading high-octane action for deep psychological insight and the quiet tension of living a double life. The narrative voice is wry, detached, and sharply observant, perfectly capturing the profound loneliness and alienation of a young queer woman navigating both the suffocating norms of the 1960s and the paranoid, shifting loyalties of Cold War Argentina. It is a deeply character-driven experience, wrapping a coming-of-age story inside a tense political backdrop. Readers who love the cool, pragmatic prose of classic noir and the emotional texture of historical fiction will find themselves completely absorbed by this shadowy, compelling world.
