Lord Harry

First published 1997 · 424 pages

A spirited, cross-dressing Regency romp where a stubborn quest for vengeance accidentally unravels into a passionate, banter-filled romance.

What it feels like

Reading this classic historical romance feels like stepping into a delightfully theatrical Regency farce, where high-stakes vengeance quickly gives way to comedic entanglement. The pace is brisk and bouncy, propelled by energetic dialogue and the sheer absurdity of a heroine determined to duel a seasoned Marquess while disguised as a young gentleman. Despite the underlying grief that kicks off the plot, the mood remains buoyant, playful, and undeniably swoony. The prose is signature Coulter, witty, slightly melodramatic, and heavily focused on the crackling chemistry between a spunky, headstrong protagonist and an exasperated but thoroughly charmed hero. It is a perfect, comforting escape for readers who love the gender-bending tropes of classic romance, offering a joyful journey from mistaken enmity to passionate surrender.

About the book

Lord Harry, one of my first novels, was originally titled Lord Harry's Folly. I've rewritten the story extensively, adding to and changing dialogue, actions and descriptions, yet the original plot is still here. I'm convinced-and I'm sure your will be to-that the characters are much happier now that they've lived with me for 15 years and taught me more about themselves.

Lord Harry is really Henrietta Rolland, a young lady who has assumed the guise of a gentleman to track down and kill Jason Cavander, the Marquess of Oberlon, the man she believes responsible for her brother Damien's death at the Battle of Waterloo. She wants to challenge him a duel. When he's lying at her feet, then and only then will she tell him why she's killed him...
