Being there
142 pages
A deadpan, surreal fable about a blank slate of a man upon whom the world projects its own desperate need for profundity.
What it feels like
Reading this novella feels like walking through a sterile, brightly lit television studio where everyone is speaking in profound-sounding nonsense. The prose is deliberately flat and unadorned, mirroring the absolute emptiness of its protagonist, which creates a delightfully unsettling reading experience. It moves at a brisk, almost fable-like pace, pulling you through a series of increasingly absurd social and political escalations. The humor is incredibly dry and deadpan, relying on the agonizing gap between what the world sees and the absolute nothingness that is actually there. It is a perfect fit for readers who love sharp, cynical social satire and surreal, philosophical parables that expose the hollow core of media, celebrity, and modern intellectualism.
